Firebug is a great extension to Firefox. Firebug integrates with Firefox to put a wealth of development tools at your fingertips while you browse. You can edit, debug, and monitor CSS, HTML, and JavaScript live in any web page.

Antivirus and firewall
At AVG Free Advisor you find AVG Anti-Virus Free and AVG Anti-Spyware Free which is for private, non-commercial, single home computer use.
I use AVG Anti-Virus plus Firewall and it works very well. It gives an integrated security protection against viruses, worms, trojans and hackers.
xplorer² Windows File Manager
xplorer² is a great dual pane Windows file manager. I use the free version, for home and academic users, and it is really great.
The previous version was called 2xExplorer which still is available but xplorer² is better.

XnView
XnView is a great free software to view, organise and convert graphics files. I use XnView myself and I like it a lot.
Instant Messaging (chat)
Trillian is a fully featured, stand-alone, skinnable chat client that supports AIM, ICQ, MSN, Yahoo Messenger, and IRC. Skype
Skype is not new but it is a great service. The basic service Skype to Skype (computer to computer over internet) is free. Over time Skype have added Voicemail, SkypeOut (call landlines and mobiles direct from Skype) and SkypeIn (receive calls from landline and mobile phones).
Juice
Juice is a free podcast receiver. A great software that I use to easier get the podcasts I like.
Open Web Design
Open Web Design is a community of designers and site owners sharing free web design templates as well as web design information.
Webbrowser and emailclient from Mozilla
At Mozilla you can get Firefox which is a superb free webbrowser. You can add extensions to Firefox to make it even better.
